Plagiarism

I ran into a case of plagiarism today involving the company I work for.

This website, Ron’s ROV Links, totally ripped off this article, didn’t cite the source or link to the original, AND hotlinked the images. That’s breaking internet courtesy guidelines.

See for yourself:

I sent an email, so we’ll see how they respond.

On a semi-related note, Saab makes undersea vehicles.

redlists Beta Launch

My buddy Matt and I have been working on our mailing list application/service, redlists, for quite a while now, and we’ve just launched the beta.

Redlists is a mailing list service that is remotely hosted and managed. Subscription management is handled by the subscribers themselves, rather than solely the list manager. When logged in to redlists, users can manage their subscription status and subscribe to new public lists.

redlists login

Message archives, drafting, user management, and multiple list management are supported. Integrated tools are in the works, including widgets that can be plopped in your site and a contact importer (for those switching from another mailing list method that want to manually add subscribers.)

We are currently looking for beta testers. During the beta period, the service is free. Upon initial launch, rates will be announced. We still need to figure out how to cover our costs. If you would like to test the service or have any input on what you think appropriate pricing would be, please contact me at ross at redlists.com, or leave a comment on this post.

Redlists was written in Ruby on Rails. Matt and I made heavy use of Github and Lighthouse during development and have had a lot of fun with it. I am mainly responsible for the interface while Matt gets credit for pretty much all of the functionality.

Please let me know what you think!

Some quick plugs

Last night I played an awesome show with three great bands that I recommend to anyone who will take a recommendation.

It was a lot of fun. Real Live Tigers and Brown Bird are on tour and Felix joined us from New Orleans.

In other news, it looks like I’m doing recording work for the Gary Gonzalez / Geraldo! split that they’ve been planning/putting off since forever ago. I’ll probably post samples when we finish.

GTA IV just sold a CD

I bought, am playing, and enjoying Grand Theft Auto IV and it’s a pretty amazing game.

It’s also a good salesman.

I hopped in a car to do a cab fare and started listening to the “Fusion FM” station. A song came on that I really enjoyed, so I dialed Lazlow (948-555-0100) and he sent me the song title and artist to me in a text message. Genius!

Then I bought the CD.

I hope there are more instances of this with other people that own this game. It’d be nice to have this good of soundtrack in more games.

Growing a Fat Head

Today I received my Cascade Fat Head ribbon mic. I ordered the one with the Lundahl transformer just for the heck of it. This is my first ribbon mic, and I’m going to have to say this thing was worth every penny. It comes in a box within a box. That’s almost my favorite part about it.

I’ve used it on a few instruments today and it has proven to be pretty versatile. I mic’d bass through my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and the low end response is amazing on this thing! I had to round off some lows starting at about 100hz to tame it. This probably also had a lot to do with mic placement.

I tried it as an overhead in MS Stereo with a cheap little MXL 991 as the mid signal. I originally paired it with a Rode NT1-A, but I didn’t really like the sound I was getting and it was a pain to position with the stands I have. I’m pretty happy with the sound I got out of the two; a pretty dark sound. I did have to EQ the MXL a little to match the Fat Head’s high end response, as it’s not as bright.

For acoustic guitar (again in MS stereo with the MXL) it gave a nice flat sound. It may not be sparkly enough for some people’s taste, but I really like it.

But where I think this thing really shines is electric guitar. This is the best sound I’ve gotten with my Blues Jr., and with only one mic and minimal to no EQing. It seems to give it even more bite and character. I have yet to try it with another mic, but it seems like it would do well for room sound.

Sometime this week I’ll put up my Fat Head test song. If you can think of any preloaded DAW demo song, you’re probably not too far away from what it sounds like.

Update
Here it is.

Solitaire

I thought Solitaire was impossible until today when I beat it on my iPod.

You know when you play the version that comes with Windows and the cards jump all over the place when you win?
Doesn’t happen on an iPod. All I got was:

“We have a winner!”

Lame. It was not a gratifying experience. I was actually pretty frustrated. This was my first victory at Solitaire. I wanted superfluous card effects.

Moral of the story: If all you do is play Solitaire, don’t waste money on an iPod.
